Hey sexy. What's up.

I may do a friends cut. Actually, I am going to do one. I have never ever ever done one before, and I don't really WANT to, but dude, my friends list is out of control (for me). I just need a downsize for my own sake. I'm sure I'll confuse people and mix names up and cut some users I don't mean to cut, but I will happily add each and every person back who wants to stay friends. I mean it. So if you see your name cut, just send a message to my LJ inbox and give me a stern talking to, and we'll become friends all over again. And just remember that it's not you, it's me, I swear.

geewhiz - got your email, am thinking it over, and did you receive my MO yet?

edit: yeah, that was the most imprecise, impulsive f-cut ever, so if you think you should still be there -- you probably should. thanks for understanding, please send me a msg soon, thx!

Not yet, but I'll let you know when I do (or if a week passes without receiving it).

Re the email subject (haven't read it yet), I think it's do-able, especially if we put a cap on.

I think it's do-able too. Want to mull it over, be 100% sure I am ready to commit. I think the extra time will help me with that. I may have a new computer sit-eee-ation improved by then.

I made a post at the exchange to see what other things members have joined up with - give us an idea of where deadlines are falling.

NEW COMPUTER? I HOPE SO!

I am in serious debate over buying a new computer, it needs to happen, just need to figure out WHAT I'm buying, when and where. I am tempted to get a refurbished laptop so I can have all the extra functionality of a top of the line laptop, but there is some risk to that so we'll see.

Once this one goes I'm getting a refurb'd one instead of new-new. I think they have to either fix whatever the problem was before they can sell it again, and in some cases the only 'problem' was that the person who bought it changed their mind and brought it back (I've done that before) so they can't sell it as new.

Is your participation dependent on a new system? I know your current one is slow, but we'd be essentially cutting down the number of things we need to do by half under the proposed number. I AM SO HORRIBLY EXCITED - such a 180.

I don't think my participation is dependent on having something new. The great thing about the laptop will be how mobile I'll be with it, so I'll be able to do exchange stuff on evenings and weekends I'm at Steve's. (I'm assuming he has wireless.)

I'm iffy about refurbished though because I had a bad experience with a refurbished camera once. It never worked for me. I didn't bother sending it back but I should have. So, we'll see. My brother's friend works at Tiger Direct so he gave me some advice about what models to look at. NOT an HP, for the record. XP

Is that a yes^ (that was supposed to be a question mark, I don't know what is going on with this keyboard). :D :D :D No pressure or anything. *pressures*

That would be wonderful though if you did have one simply for the increased access we'd have to you and you to the email and exchange comm. Also if you are up for it let's use google docs again for the spreadsheet - so much better than how we worked in previous years!

I'm iffy about refurbished though because I had a bad experience with a refurbished camera once.

That would scare me off one as well. And ahh, my sister is buying a new laptop and asked me about some models, I have no idea why b/c I am horrible at computers - what does your brother's friend have to say about Gateway laptops? What about HPs are problematic?

It is a yes. :P

Not sure about Gateways, but I wouldn't buy an HP. In fact, I'm using one right now (the one Steve and I share, I get it in summer, he gets it the rest of the year) and I haaaate it. They stock it full of completely useless HP programs which can be difficult to remove w/o potentially jeopardizing the laptop's functions.

My suggestion is to get a Dell or Toshiba. Well, actually, if your sister has the cash, get a Macbook, they are consistently rated the very best by Consumer Reports which I swear by, but they're so expensive that I doubt they'll be an option for her. But Dell has excellent customer service (our IT guys at work swear by them), good prices, and you can get airmiles, while Toshiba is known for having a couple of good, inexpensive models. Do you want to borrow my Consumer Reports account to log-in and see what they recommend? I find they have a lot of very helpful information on things like what exactly is processor speed, what is RAM, what is hard drive memory, etc.

BUT ONE THING YOU MUST NOT DO: do not buy a Laptop with Windows Vista unless it comes with an automatic upgrade to Windows 7 once you boot it up. Dell offers this for a fee, and it's worth it.

I don't know if I mentioned it, but she did end up getting one last week or this weekend, and it's a Toshiba. I think she's had one of those before (but it might have been a Compaq, which I think was bought by HP).

UGH MACS. :( I don't hate them, but I don't feel they're as much better than PCs as people seem to believe. I've heard just as many "my computer crashed!" stories from apple owners as I have from PC owners. I think the key is to really look at what you need it for, then check out all the options according to that info.

I'm not going to get a new system soon if I can avoid it, but plan to a few months (or more) after Windows 7 has gone live, at a stage when all the major bugs have been worked out. At that point I will come knocking for your CR info! :D

SO GREAT. I drove through four states in three days - am impressed with my self. And omg her couch is out of control...maybe the most comfortable couch ever, it was ridiculous. I also find the "small town USA" experience fascinating. Definitely want to go back and do more.

Oh, and the poutine was AWFUL by the time I got there as expected!

So how long were you there (when did you leave/return)? alskd I wish I had gone, it sounds like such a good time (but tell me moar!) and yes I knew the poutine would be gross. Did she still try it? If so, I demand a do-over, to experience good poutine. We could make it for her.

I left Friday around 2pm and got there around 10pm. It was dark, and those were dark country roads, so I either need to leave earlier next time or find a way to make up some of that time. (To be fair, two things caused this: One, I took the QEW out of Ontario and it was a nightmare until I got past Cambridge so that added about 45 minutes to my drive. And two, I took the QEW b/c I wanted to go the longer way around Lake Erie for the sake of scenery and being able to say I did it -- but if I'm going to be racing against the sun every time, I won't be doing it again.)

And I left Sunday about the same time (2pm) and went through Michigan to the 401 (around the other side of Lake Erie) and got home about 8:00pm. So we had about a day and a half together, and it was totes awesome-sauce (heard an ad on the radio where they used that phrase -- true story). Would have liked another day but it actually wasn't that bad in terms of how I felt after doing all that drivingt. Probably used about a tank and a half of gas total and spent maybe $10 US on tolls.

Yeah, she tried the poutine -- and wasn't impressed, argh, so a do-over is an absolute necessity. That was a bummer but I had to try. We went to a farmer's market Saturday morning, lots of fresh fruit and baked goods and crafts to purchase. I bought two hand-knit washclothes for $4 each. Then we went to the 100 Monkeys concert...what an experience that was, everything you'd think a twi-hard concert would be. SO MANY MOTHERS W/DAUGHTERS. All of them dressed "punk as fuck" as though they all went shopping at Hot Topic or Below the Belt the day before. Haha, I'm still laughing about this, one mom sitting in front of us with her 14-ish yo daughter had the "Jon and Kate" haircut, ugh! And then, no Jackson?? I heard he got called back to film New Moon but I am pretending he deliberately cockblocked the obvious crowd of twi-hards. ♥

I was super thrilled to meet her cats Pippin and Rosie -- total sweethearts, wary but very friendly, not the kind of kitties you can maul and hug often but funny and talkative and fun to be around. :)

Oh, dude, you should have seen all the food she sent me back with. My own mother never made me a lunch so good! I wanted to see her dad's house but ran out of time -- apparently it is one of those post-WWII homes built during the housing crisis of the 50's, so every house in the neighbourhood is IDENTICAL. Seriously. I intend to poke around more next time. I want to go to the speedway too -- is that what it's called? The local raceway, it's enormously popular to race old cars there on Saturday nights, Ali said, so I am determined to check it out. There are a couple of big craft shows in the area every year, so I'd like to plan it so the next time I go, we can check one of those out.

1.5 days isn't bad, sounds like you guys were able to get a lot in.

LOL but also :( b/c like poor Alison! Was the band still good otherwise?

Awww! Her cats look so cute from the various pics she's posted.

So happy to hear you guys had a good time! :D

Oh, of course, I felt bad for Alison, but I think she enjoyed the bands regardless so I hope she got something good out of it. Plus, it was many kinds of hysterical. You should have seen us hiding in her car so we wouldn't have to line up with all the twi-hards before the doors opened. I think that might have been worth it.

DAMN, you packed a lot into this weekend!

WTH, how can the 100 Monkeys have a concert without their bandmate? I would've asked for a refund! You had to endure all those twihards for nothing. :'(

Tell me more about this awesome sofa Ali has. Did you meet her mom?!

Do I have to have a paid account? B/c I want to have a shiny new layout but I don't want to give LJ my money. (This is why I only have six icons too.)

I actually do know a fair bit about customization but LJ messed with my head when they changed the customization panel.

And sheesh, dude, of course I kept you. ♥

UM. NO. You won't be able to customize comment pages, but other than that the CSS of your journal is fully customizable.
